Valerenols

Valerenols are a group of volatile alcohol compounds identified in the root and essential oil of Valeriana officinalis (valerian). The term commonly refers to valerenol itself, a representative sesquiterpenoid alcohol, and related constituents that can form during extraction or hydrolysis of valerian constituents such as valepotriates.

Chemistry and stability: Valerenols are volatile and somewhat unstable, and their concentrations can be affected by processing, storage, and purification. They may degrade or transform under certain conditions, influencing the aroma profile of valerian oil rather than its primary pharmacological activity.

Occurrence and detection: Valerenols are reported in valerian root oil and related extracts, typically in trace to minor amounts compared with other constituents. Their exact levels vary with plant source, cultivar, growing conditions, harvest time, and extraction method. They are usually identified and quantified using analytical techniques such as gas chromatography–mass spectrometry.

Pharmacology and effects: There is limited research on the specific pharmacological activity of valerenols. Valerian’s reported sedative effects are generally attributed to a complex mixture of constituents, including valepotriates, valerenic acids, and related compounds, with valerenol considered part of this broader matrix. No robust evidence supports a standalone, clinically meaningful effect for valerenols alone.
