Vaihtosähkögeneraattorit, or AC generators, are electrical machines that convert mechanical energy into alternating current electrical energy. This is achieved through the principle of electromagnetic induction, where a changing magnetic field induces an electromotive force (voltage) in a conductor. In a typical AC generator, a rotor, which is a rotating component, produces a magnetic field. This magnetic field can be created by permanent magnets or by electromagnets energized by a direct current. The stator, which is a stationary component, contains windings of wire. As the rotor spins, its magnetic field sweeps across the stator windings, inducing a voltage that alternates in direction.

The frequency of the generated AC voltage is directly proportional to the speed of the rotor and the number of magnetic poles on the rotor. The magnitude of the induced voltage depends on the strength of the magnetic field, the number of turns in the stator windings, and the speed of rotation. AC generators are the most common type of electrical generator used in power plants worldwide due to their efficiency in transmitting electricity over long distances. The alternating nature of the current allows for easy voltage transformation using transformers, which is crucial for efficient power distribution. Common examples of AC generators include alternators found in vehicles and large-scale synchronous generators used in power stations.
