Vaihepolymeerointi refers to a polymerization process where the reaction occurs in a single, homogeneous phase. This means that all reactants, catalysts, and the resulting polymer are dissolved in the same solvent. This contrasts with heterogeneous polymerization methods where multiple phases exist, such as suspension or emulsion polymerization.

In phase polymerization, the solubility of the monomer and the growing polymer chain in the reaction medium is crucial. If the polymer remains soluble throughout the reaction, the process is often referred to as solution polymerization. However, if the polymer starts to precipitate out of the solvent as it forms, while still maintaining a homogeneous mixture of reactants and catalyst, it can also be considered a form of phase polymerization. The key is that the reaction environment itself is a single phase, typically a liquid.

The advantages of phase polymerization include good control over molecular weight and polymer architecture, as well as excellent heat dissipation due to the homogeneous nature of the mixture. This can lead to polymers with uniform properties. However, challenges can arise if the polymer precipitates, as it may lead to increased viscosity and difficulties in handling and product isolation. Furthermore, solvent recovery and purification are necessary steps, which can add to the overall cost and environmental impact of the process. Examples of polymers produced via phase polymerization include poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene in solution.
