Central banks or financial institutions might enter into such agreements to manage liquidity, stabilize exchange rates, or secure access to foreign currencies during times of economic stress. For instance, a central bank might swap its domestic currency for a foreign currency with another central bank, with an agreement to reverse the transaction at a later date. This provides temporary access to needed funds without immediately impacting the open market.

Beyond currency, the concept can extend to other areas. Businesses might engage in reciprocal agreements to share resources, technology, or distribution networks. In a similar vein, individuals or organizations could arrange for the exchange of services or property, though these are less formally structured than financial swaps. The core principle remains the mutual exchange of value between parties for a defined period and under specific terms. The purpose of such arrangements is usually to achieve mutual benefit, mitigate risk, or overcome temporary shortages or surpluses.
