Vahukustutussüsteeme, also known as foam fire suppression systems, are a type of fixed fire fighting equipment designed to extinguish fires involving flammable liquids or materials that burn with a low-burning residue. These systems work by discharging a foam concentrate mixed with water. The foam forms a blanket over the burning surface, which suppresses the fire by separating the fuel from the oxygen and by cooling the fuel.

The foam concentrate is stored in a tank and is mixed with water in a proportioning device. This mixture is then pumped through a network of pipes to discharge devices such as foam nozzles or sprinkler heads. There are various types of foam concentrates available, including aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), film-forming fluoroprotein foam (FFFP), and alcohol-resistant foam (AR-AFFF), each suited for different types of flammable liquids.

Vahukustutussüsteeme are commonly used in high-risk areas such as aircraft hangars, fuel storage facilities, chemical plants, and oil refineries. They are effective against Class B fires (flammable liquids and gases) and can also be used on Class A fires (ordinary combustibles) under certain circumstances. The design and installation of these systems must comply with relevant fire safety standards and regulations to ensure their effective operation in an emergency. Regular maintenance and testing are crucial for maintaining the reliability of the system.
