In practice, vaaliminen includes setting the election schedule, maintaining voter registers, approving candidate lists, designing ballots, and ensuring accessibility and security of the voting process. It covers campaigning regulation and campaign finance rules, as well as the stages of voting, such as early voting, on-site voting, and postal voting where applicable. The process also involves communication with voters, public information campaigns, and procedures to resolve complaints or disputes about eligibility and conduct.

After polls close, vaaliminen includes vote counting, result tabulation, and official certification. Electoral authorities oversee adherence to voting rights, secrecy, equal suffrage, and integrity, with mechanisms to detect and address irregularities.
