Vaagnapõletik

Vaagnapõletik, also known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), is an infection of the female reproductive organs. It most commonly affects the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. The infection typically begins in the vagina or cervix and spreads upwards into the pelvic cavity.

The most common cause of vaagnapõletik is sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly chlamydia and gonorrhea. However, other bacteria can also cause the condition. Risk factors include having unprotected sex, a history of STIs, and multiple sexual partners.

Symptoms of vaagnapõletik can vary in severity. Some individuals may experience mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, while others may have more severe discomfort. Common symptoms include pelvic pain, fever, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, and painful urination.

If left untreated, vaagnapõletik can lead to serious complications. These include chronic pelvic pain, infertility due to damage to the fallopian tubes, and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a pelvic exam, medical history, and laboratory tests to identify the causative bacteria. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to clear the infection. It is crucial to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed. Partners of individuals diagnosed with vaagnapõletik also need to be tested and treated to prevent reinfection. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential to minimize the risk of long-term complications.
