Võttmesaegid

Võttmesaegid refers to a traditional Estonian folk music ensemble, typically consisting of a fiddle ( viiul) and a dulcimer ( kannel). This instrumental pairing is characteristic of the early period of Estonian folk music, predating the widespread adoption of instruments like the accordion. The combination of the bowing and melodic capabilities of the fiddle with the strumming and harmonic possibilities of the dulcimer created a distinct sound.

These ensembles were common in rural Estonia, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Performances often accompanied social gatherings, dances, and celebrations. The repertoire would have included dance tunes such as polkas, waltzes, and schottisches, as well as more lyrical melodies. The players, often skilled amateurs or travelling musicians, would have relied on memory and improvisation, passing down tunes through oral tradition.

While the võttmesaegid ensemble was a prominent feature of Estonian folk music history, its prevalence gradually declined with the introduction of newer instruments and changing musical tastes. However, there has been a resurgence of interest in traditional folk music in recent decades, leading to a renewed appreciation and performance of the võttmesaegid style. Modern interpretations may sometimes include additional instruments, but the core fiddle and dulcimer combination remains central to its identity. The term itself is rooted in older Estonian dialectal forms and reflects the historical significance of this musical format.
