Võrguadressid, often translated as network addresses, are unique identifiers assigned to devices connected to a computer network. These addresses are crucial for the proper functioning of networks, as they allow devices to locate and communicate with each other. Think of them as postal addresses for data packets.

There are two primary types of network addresses: IP addresses and MAC addresses. IP addresses, such as 192.168.1.1 or 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334, are used at the internet layer to route data across different networks. They can be dynamic, meaning they change periodically, or static, remaining constant. MAC addresses, on the other hand, are hardware-level identifiers burned into the network interface card of a device. They are globally unique and do not typically change, serving to identify devices within a local network segment.

The management and assignment of network addresses are handled by various protocols and organizations. For IP addresses, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) oversees their allocation to regional internet registries, which then distribute them to internet service providers and organizations. Within a local network, protocols like DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatically assign IP addresses to devices, simplifying network administration. Understanding network addresses is fundamental to comprehending how the internet and local networks operate.
