Võimsuspektrid refer to the distribution of power of a signal or process over its frequency components. In essence, it describes how much power is present at each specific frequency. For a stationary random process, the power spectral density (PSD) is the Fourier transform of its autocorrelation function. The PSD is typically a function of frequency, often denoted by S(f) or P(f), where f represents frequency. Its units are power per unit frequency, such as watts per hertz (W/Hz) or decibels per hertz (dB/Hz).

The concept of power spectrum is fundamental in many fields, including signal processing, telecommunications, acoustics, and physics. For instance, in signal processing, analyzing the power spectrum of a signal allows engineers to identify dominant frequencies, filter out unwanted noise, and understand the characteristics of the signal. In astronomy, the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background radiation provides crucial information about the early universe.

The interpretation of a power spectrum depends on the context. A peak in the power spectrum indicates that a particular frequency component carries a significant amount of power. Conversely, a low value suggests that the power at that frequency is negligible. Numerical methods are often employed to estimate power spectra from finite data records, with common techniques including the periodogram and Welch's method. These methods involve dividing the signal into segments, computing the Fourier transform of each segment, and then averaging the squared magnitudes.
