The date indicated on a product's packaging as "parim enne" (best before) refers to the point until which the product is expected to retain its optimal quality, such as taste, texture, and nutritional value, when stored correctly. Consuming a product after its "parim enne" date does not necessarily mean it is unsafe, but its quality may have deteriorated.

Conversely, "kõlblik kuni" (use by) dates are more critical, particularly for perishable goods like fresh meat, fish, and dairy products. These dates signify the limit up to which the product is considered safe to consume. After the "kõlblik kuni" date, the product may pose a health risk due to potential bacterial growth or spoilage.
