Välikoodiformaatit, often translated as intermediate code formats, are a crucial concept in compiler design. They represent a stage in the compilation process where the source code of a programming language is transformed into a machine-independent representation before being translated into machine code for a specific processor. This intermediate form acts as a bridge between the high-level source language and the low-level target machine.

The primary purpose of using intermediate code is to facilitate optimizations and to allow compilers to support multiple source languages and multiple target architectures more easily. By generating intermediate code, a compiler can perform extensive optimizations on this abstract representation without being tied to the specifics of the source language or the target machine. This optimized intermediate code can then be translated into machine code for various processors.

Common examples of intermediate code formats include Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs), Three-Address Code (TAC), and Static Single Assignment (SSA) form. ASTs represent the syntactic structure of the source code. Three-Address Code typically involves instructions with at most three operands, making it easier to analyze and manipulate. SSA form is a more modern representation that offers significant advantages for certain types of optimizations by ensuring that each variable is assigned a value exactly once. The choice of intermediate code format often depends on the specific compiler and the optimization strategies employed.
