Uudelleenlähettimen, often translated as repeater in English, is a fundamental electronic device used to regenerate and retransmit signals. In telecommunications and networking, its primary function is to extend the range of a signal, overcoming attenuation that weakens it over distance. Without repeaters, signals would quickly become too weak to be reliably interpreted, limiting the effective reach of communication systems.

Repeaters work by receiving a signal, regenerating its waveform and amplitude to its original strength, and then transmitting it onward. This process effectively amplifies the signal but also crucially cleans it up, removing accumulated noise and distortion. This regeneration is key to maintaining signal integrity over long distances.

In wired networks, such as Ethernet, repeaters are used to connect network segments. For example, older Ethernet standards had strict cable length limitations, and repeaters were essential for creating larger networks by linking multiple segments together. In wireless communication, repeaters are widely deployed to improve coverage in areas where the signal from the primary transmitter is weak, such as in large buildings or areas with geographical obstructions. They capture the existing signal and re-broadcast it, extending the service area.

The concept of a repeater is also applicable in optical fiber communication, where optical repeaters (often called optical amplifiers) boost the light signal without converting it to an electrical signal and back, a process that can introduce errors.
