Propagated outbreaks, on the other hand, occur when a disease spreads from person to person. These outbreaks typically have a more gradual onset and can last for a longer period, with each infected individual potentially infecting others. This pattern is characteristic of many infectious diseases like influenza or measles.

A third category, mixed outbreaks, combines elements of both common-source and propagated outbreaks. Initial exposure from a common source can lead to person-to-person transmission, resulting in a more complex pattern of spread.

Further classifications can consider the mode of transmission, such as airborne, droplet, or vector-borne, and the geographic scope of the outbreak, ranging from localized clusters to widespread epidemics or pandemics.
