Usbekistan

Usbekistan is a Central Asian country that is commonly spelled Uzbekistan in many contexts. It is landlocked and bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the northeast, Tajikistan to the southeast, Afghanistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest. The capital and largest city is Tashkent.

Usbekistan covers about 447,400 square kilometers and has a population of around 34 million (as of 2023). The inhabitants are predominantly ethnic Uzbeks, with minorities including Tajiks, Kazakhs, Russians, and Karakalpaks. The official language is Uzbek; Russian remains widely used in education and government.

Historically part of the Silk Road, the region was incorporated into the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. It gained independence in 1991. Since 2016, the president has been Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who has pursued economic liberalization and governance reforms.

The economy relies on natural gas, cotton, and gold, with growing emphasis on diversification, manufacturing, and services. Agriculture remains important, and the government has invested in roads, energy projects, and logistics to improve regional trade and connectivity with neighboring countries.

Cultural heritage centers on cities of the ancient Silk Road, such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, featuring mosques, madrasas, and mausoleums. The country maintains a rich tradition of music, crafts, and cuisine, and preserves several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
