Upperocean
Upperocean refers to the portion of the ocean from the air–sea interface down to the depth where the water becomes distinctly separate from the deeper abyss. It is commonly defined as the surface layer down to about 100–200 meters, though the exact depth varies with latitude, season, and wind forcing. This region includes the surface layer and the mixed layer, where buoyancy and momentum are actively mixed by winds, waves, and convection.
The upper ocean is characterized by strong vertical gradients in temperature, salinity, and density near the
Key processes in the upper ocean include air–sea exchanges of heat, momentum, and gases such as carbon
Measurements rely on a combination of satellite observations (sea surface temperature, sea surface height, ocean color)
