Unterschiedsmerkmal

Unterschiedsmerkmal is a German term that describes a property or characteristic that serves to distinguish between objects, categories or states. The concept is used across disciplines to identify what sets elements apart and to enable classifications, comparisons, or identifications.

In linguistic and phonological contexts, the term is closely related to the idea of contrastive features. Here, distinguishing characteristics such as voicing, place of articulation or rounding determine minimal pairs and phoneme contrasts. Although the standard term in much of German linguistics is Unterscheidungsmerkmal, Unterschiedemerkmal appears in some texts as a variant or informal formulation to denote a feature that differentiates sounds or forms.
