Unitel

Unitel is a telecommunications operator based in Chisinau, Moldova. It provides mobile telephony, fixed line, broadband Internet and digital TV services. Unitel was launched in 1997 as a subsidiary of Moldtelecom and became the first GSM operator in the country. It operates a nationwide coverage area that extends to remote villages and serves approximately five hundred thousand subscribers as of 2023. The service portfolio includes 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G services, mobile broadband, and value‑added services such as mobile payments and cloud computing.

Unitel maintains a national network of more than seventy base‑station sites and a modern data‑centre infrastructure. The company has received several awards for network quality and customer service and is a member of the GSM Association. Its business model is focused on expanding broadband penetration and deploying next‑generation IP‑based services throughout Moldova.

In addition, the brand Unitel is used by other operators in different jurisdictions. In Uruguay, Unitel is a mobile operator founded in 1994 that offers its own mobile and digital services. The name has also appeared for brief periods in the telecom markets of other European countries. These companies are unrelated to the Moldovan operator and operate independently in their respective markets.
