Unicodemärgistus

Unicodemärgistus refers to the system of assigning unique numerical values, known as code points, to characters. This allows for the representation of a vast array of characters from virtually all writing systems used worldwide, as well as symbols and emojis. The Unicode standard, maintained by the Unicode Consortium, is the de facto international standard for character encoding.

Each character is assigned a specific code point, typically represented in hexadecimal format, such as U+0041 for the Latin capital letter A. These code points are then encoded into bytes using various encoding schemes like UTF-8, UTF-16, or UTF-32. UTF-8 is the most widely used encoding on the internet, as it is backward compatible with ASCII and efficiently represents common characters.

The primary purpose of Unicodemärgistus is to ensure consistent representation and processing of text across different platforms, software, and languages. Before Unicode, text processing often relied on numerous, incompatible character sets, leading to problems with displaying or exchanging documents containing characters outside a specific set. Unicode overcomes this by providing a universal character set, simplifying internationalization and localization efforts. It enables seamless communication and data exchange in a globalized digital environment, supporting everything from ancient scripts to modern emojis.
