Unfallversicherung, commonly referred to as accident insurance, is a form of insurance that provides financial protection against the costs and consequences of accidental injuries. It is distinct from health insurance, which covers medical treatment in general, and from life insurance, which pays a benefit on death. Unfallversicherung can be statutory, mandatory for many workers in several countries, or private, offering supplemental coverage.

In its statutory form, coverage typically includes medical treatment, rehabilitation, and benefits to compensate for lost income due to temporary or permanent disability. In many systems it also provides a pension or lump-sum payment to survivors in case of accidental death. The scope often covers accidents that occur at work or on the way to work, as well as certain occupational diseases recognized by law. Funding is usually borne by employers and administered by specialized accident insurers or Berufsgenossenschaften in some countries; premiums are driven by the employer’s risk profile rather than the employee’s.

Private Unfallversicherung is purchased by individuals and can extend to non-occupational accidents, worldwide coverage, higher benefit limits, and optional riders such as daily sickness benefits, convalescence allowances, or coverage for dependent children.

Claims typically require prompt reporting to the employer or insurer and documentation of the accident, medical treatment, and any resulting disability. Benefits are generally paid regardless of fault, but the exact rules, benefit amounts, and waiting periods vary by jurisdiction and policy.
