Undercapping

Undercapping refers to a phenomenon in certain geological or engineering contexts where a caprock, a layer of impermeable or less permeable material, is not fully sealed or has structural weaknesses. This allows fluids, such as groundwater, hydrocarbons, or waste materials, to migrate through or around the caprock, potentially compromising its intended function.

The primary concern with undercapping is the uncontrolled movement of substances. In oil and gas reservoirs, undercapping can lead to leakage of hydrocarbons to the surface or into adjacent formations, reducing recovery efficiency and posing environmental risks. In the context of underground waste disposal, undercapping can result in the contamination of groundwater resources.

Undercapping can arise from various factors. Natural geological processes, such as faulting, fracturing, or the presence of porous inclusions within the caprock, can create pathways for fluid migration. In engineered structures like landfills or injection wells, undercapping can be a result of construction defects, inadequate material selection, or long-term degradation of the capping system.

Techniques such as seismic surveys, well logging, and groundwater monitoring are used to detect potential undercapping issues. Remediation strategies may involve sealing fractures, reinforcing the caprock, or implementing secondary containment measures.
