Underbeskydd

Underbeskydd is a Swedish term used in social policy to describe a protective status or set of protective measures applied to individuals who are assessed to be at risk of harm or neglect. The phrase translates roughly as "under protection" and is used to denote that authorities have taken steps to safeguard the person’s welfare.

Typically, underbeskydd concerns children and young people in danger, but it can also apply to adults in need of protection due to abuse, neglect, or vulnerability. The concept is primarily operational within the municipal social services (socialtjänsten) in Sweden, which assess risk and determine appropriate protective actions within the framework of national social welfare law.

Protective arrangements may include targeted support services, regular monitoring, restrictions on the environment (such as protective placement or supervision), or coordinated efforts with guardians, relatives, or foster carers. Decisions are usually based on risk assessments and are subject to periodic review. The goal of underbeskydd is to ensure safety while supporting development and, where possible, family reunification or integration.
