Underattribute

Underattribute is a term used in data modeling and information retrieval to describe an attribute that is too general or insufficient to distinguish items in a dataset. An underattribute provides limited resolution and can hamper filtering, search, and analysis because many items share the same value for that attribute.

The phenomenon arises in several contexts: when a schema is designed with coarse categories, during rapid prototyping, or in domains where data collection constraints limit granularity. Common examples include a category field that lumps diverse items, a region field that records only broad geographic areas, or a date field that stores only the year rather than a full timestamp. Such attributes may be intentional for performance or simplicity, but they reduce the discriminating power of the data.

Implications for data quality and system design include reduced query precision, ambiguous results, and challenges in data integration. Remedies typically involve introducing more discriminating attributes, splitting existing attributes into hierarchical subfields, or adopting multi-level schemas that provide both coarse and fine-grained views. Data enrichment, normalization, and the use of derived attributes can also help mitigate underattributes by increasing the granularity of the information available for querying and analysis.

The term is not part of a widely standardized vocabulary. It appears primarily in discussions of schema design and data quality as a descriptive label for low-granularity attributes, with related concepts including coarse attributes, low-cardinality fields, or underdetermined features in some machine learning contexts.
