Umspritzen

Umspritzen is a term used to describe the application of a liquid by spraying onto or around a surface. It can refer to delivering a coating in a new layer (respraying) as well as applying a coating to complex geometries or larger areas where brushing or dipping would be impractical.

In practice, umspritzen is common in painting and coatings. Typical media include paints, varnishes, primers, and protective lacquers. The process relies on spray equipment such as spray guns, airbrushes, or aerosol cans. Key factors are the spray distance, spray pattern, overlap, and the number of passes or coats, along with appropriate drying or curing times between coats. Surface preparation and material compatibility are essential to achieve adhesion and uniform finish.

Agriculture and plant protection also use the term in a broader sense: spraying liquids such as pesticides or foliar nutrients onto crops or ornamental plants. Here, the choice of nozzle, pressure, and drift management is important to minimize environmental impact and ensure even coverage.

Advantages of umspritzen include fast, uniform coating over irregular shapes, good material utilization, and controllable thickness. Limitations include the need for proper ventilation and containment to avoid inhalation and drift, the potential for overspray and runs, and requirements for suitable substrates and curing conditions.
