Umrhubhe

Umrhubhe is a traditional musical instrument originating from Southern Africa, particularly associated with the Xhosa people of South Africa. It is a mouth-bow, meaning it is played by vibrating a string attached to a bow, with the sound being modified and amplified by the player's mouth and resonance cavity.

The instrument typically consists of a single string stretched over a flexible bow, usually made from wood. The string is often made from gut or a similar natural fiber. The player plucks or strikes the string while holding one end of the bow in their mouth. By altering the shape of their mouth and throat, as well as the position of their tongue, the player can change the pitch and timbre of the sound produced. This technique allows for a surprisingly wide range of musical expression, including melodic lines and rhythmic patterns.

Umrhubhe is often used in solo performances, storytelling, and as an accompaniment to singing.
