Umordnung

Umordnung is a German noun meaning rearrangement or reordering. In general usage it denotes the act of changing the order or arrangement of elements within a system without altering the elements themselves. The term is used across disciplines to describe different, but related, processes in linguistics, mathematics, chemistry, and computing.

In linguistics, Umordnung refers to changes in sentence structure or word order, often arising from information structure, emphasis, or historical change. Such rearrangements can alter syntactic roles and discourse focus but keep the same underlying content.

In mathematics and computer science, it denotes the reordering of a sequence, set, or data structure. A reordering can be a permutation of elements; it may have implications for convergence of series or for memory locality and algorithmic complexity. Sorting and shuffling are common examples.

In chemistry, Umordnung, or Umordnungsreaktion, describes a rearrangement of atoms within a molecule that changes its connectivity without changing its molecular formula. Classic examples include Wagner–Meerwein rearrangements and pinacol rearrangements; such processes can influence reactivity and product distribution.

Other uses include data organization, where reordering improves performance, and in formal logic or combinatorics, where Umordnung denotes a permutation of elements of a finite set.
