Unlike roughing or high vacuum pumps, they are not typically used to initially evacuate a system but rather to maintain ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions once a system has been pre-evacuated by other pumps.

Ion pumps are a common example, utilizing electric and magnetic fields to ionize gas molecules and then trapping them on charged plates.
