Ulkoryhmistä, sometimes translated as "outgroup" in English, refers to a social construct representing individuals or groups who are perceived as belonging to a different category or collective than one's own in-group. This distinction is fundamental to social identity theory and explains how people categorize themselves and others. The perceived differences between the in-group and the out-group can be based on various factors, including ethnicity, nationality, religion, political affiliation, or even shared interests.

The formation of out-groups is a natural cognitive process. It helps individuals simplify the social world by creating a sense of "us" versus "them." This categorization can lead to various social phenomena, including in-group favoritism and out-group derogation. In-group favoritism is the tendency to favor members of one's own group, while out-group derogation involves viewing out-group members more negatively.

The perception of out-groups is not inherently negative and can serve adaptive social functions. However, it can also contribute to prejudice, discrimination, and intergroup conflict when the perceived differences are exaggerated or used to justify hostility.
