Ulam

Ulam is a surname of Polish origin. Notable people with this surname include Stanisław Ulam, a mathematician and polymath, and Adam Ulam, a political scientist who specialized in Soviet studies.

Stanisław Ulam (1909–1984) was born in Lwów, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and later became a naturalized American citizen. He worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory during the Manhattan Project and made important contributions to mathematics, physics, and computation. With John von Neumann, he helped develop and popularize the Monte Carlo method, a probabilistic approach used to solve complex numerical problems in physics, engineering, and finance. He was also a co-author of the Fermi–Pasta–Ulam–Tsingou problem, a landmark numerical experiment that explored nonlinear dynamics and helped spur interest in chaos theory.

Ulam is also associated with the Ulam spiral. In the early 1960s, he described placing natural numbers on a square spiral and observed that prime numbers tend to align along diagonal lines. This visualization sparked ongoing research into prime distribution and patterns in number theory, and the spiral remains a common teaching and research aid in mathematics.

Adam Ulam was a Polish-born American political scientist and historian who specialized in Soviet affairs. He held positions in academia and contributed to Cold War scholarship, helping to shape understandings of Soviet politics and U.S.–Soviet relations.
