The University of Oslo (Universitetet i Oslo, UiO) is Norway's oldest and largest public research university. It is located in Oslo and traces its origins to 1811, when it was established as the Royal Frederick's University (Det Kongelige Frederiks Universitet) to promote higher education in the Danish-Norwegian realm. In 1939 it adopted the name Universitetet i Oslo and is commonly referred to by its Norwegian acronym UiO.
