Udvarlási

Udvarlás is a Hungarian term for the act of courting or wooing someone, encompassing expressions of romantic interest and attempts to win affection. The verb udvarol means to court, and udvarló is a suitor. Etymologically, it derives from udvar, meaning a court or courtyard, reflecting historical ideas of courtly behavior directed at a potential partner.

Historically, udvarlás in Hungary often involved formalities such as visits to the woman's family, gifts or symbolic offerings, and sometimes poetry or songs. In traditional communities, a suitor’s approach could be guided by social conventions, with family involvement and, in some periods, arrangements or betrothal as part of the process.
