They serve as tools to communicate, explore, and document design decisions and user insights. These artifacts help teams understand user needs, define product requirements, and visualize potential solutions.

Common examples of UX artifacts include user personas, which represent fictional users with specific characteristics and goals; user journey maps, illustrating the steps a user takes to achieve a goal; wireframes, low-fidelity representations of a product's structure and layout; mockups, higher-fidelity visual designs; and prototypes, interactive models that simulate user flows. Other artifacts can include usability test reports, empathy maps, and site maps.

The purpose of UX artifacts is multifaceted. They facilitate collaboration among designers, developers, product managers, and stakeholders by providing a shared understanding of the design. They also serve as a historical record, documenting the evolution of a design and the rationale behind specific choices. Furthermore, artifacts are crucial for testing and validating design ideas before significant development resources are committed. By creating and iterating on these artifacts, design teams can reduce ambiguity, identify potential problems early, and ultimately deliver more user-centered and effective products.
