The primary effect of UVB exposure on the skin is the stimulation of vitamin D production. When UVB rays interact with a precursor molecule in the skin, it triggers a chemical reaction that leads to the synthesis of vitamin D3, which is then converted into its active form in the body. The intensity of UVB radiation varies depending on factors like time of day, season, latitude, and altitude. During peak hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm, UVB levels are highest. Using sun protection measures like sunscreen, protective clothing, and seeking shade can help mitigate the harmful effects of UVB exposure while still allowing for some vitamin D synthesis.
