UVBkiirteks, also known as ultraviolet B radiation, is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths ranging from 280 to 315 nanometers. This type of radiation originates primarily from the sun but can also be produced by artificial sources like tanning beds. UVB is considered a moderate-energy form of ultraviolet radiation.

When UVB rays reach the Earth's surface, they can penetrate the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. This interaction with skin cells is responsible for both beneficial and detrimental effects. A key benefit of UVB exposure is its role in the synthesis of vitamin D3 in the skin, a crucial nutrient for bone health, immune function, and other bodily processes.

However, excessive or unprotected exposure to UVB radiation can lead to sunburn, characterized by redness, pain, and inflammation of the skin. Repeated sunburns significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. UVB is also a major contributor to premature skin aging, causing wrinkles, leathery skin, and age spots. Protective measures such as sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours are recommended to mitigate the harmful effects of UVB exposure.
