USTs

United States Treasuries (USTs) are debt securities issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to fund government spending. They include multiple maturities: Treasury Bills (short-term, up to one year), Treasury Notes (2 to 10 years), Treasury Bonds (longer than 10 years), and Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). T-Bills are issued at a discount and mature at par, while notes, bonds, and TIPS pay semiannual interest. USTs are widely regarded as among the safest investments because they are backed by the government’s credit. They are actively traded in primary and secondary markets, and yields reflect current rates. Interest on USTs is subject to federal taxes but generally exempt from state and local taxes.
