USBPD

USB Power Delivery, often abbreviated as USB PD, is a specification for a wired connection that allows for higher power levels and the ability to intelligently negotiate power needs between devices. It is a part of the USB specification, enabling faster charging and powering of a wider range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to laptops and larger peripherals. USB PD utilizes USB Type-C connectors, which are reversible and versatile.

The core functionality of USB PD lies in its ability to negotiate power profiles between a power source (like a charger or laptop) and a power sink (like a phone or monitor). Instead of fixed power outputs, devices communicate their power requirements and capabilities, allowing the source to deliver the optimal amount of power. This negotiation can occur dynamically, meaning the power level can change during operation.

USB PD supports various voltage and current combinations, offering significantly higher power than older USB standards. It can deliver up to 240W of power, making it suitable for charging even power-hungry devices like high-performance laptops. This increased power capability also allows for more efficient charging, reducing the time it takes to replenish a device's battery. Furthermore, USB PD is designed to be backward compatible, meaning older USB devices can still draw power, albeit at their specified lower rates. The bidirectional power capability is another key feature, allowing a device to act as either a power source or a power sink depending on the situation.
