UPCtunnisteet
UPCtunnisteet, also known as Universal Product Code (UPC) symbols, are barcodes used globally to identify products in retail and supply chain management. They were developed by the Uniform Code Council (UCC) and are widely used in North America. UPC-A, the most common type, consists of 12 numeric digits, including a one-digit system number, a five-digit manufacturer code, a five-digit product code, and a one-digit check digit. UPC-E, a shorter version, is used for smaller packages or items with shorter product codes. UPC symbols are machine-readable, allowing for automated data collection and processing, which enhances efficiency and accuracy in inventory management, pricing, and sales tracking. The UPC system has evolved over the years, with the introduction of UPC-EAN (European Article Number) extensions and GS1 standards, which have further standardized and expanded its use internationally. Despite the advent of newer technologies like QR codes and RFID, UPC symbols remain a staple in retail due to their simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and widespread adoption.
