ULmerkintä refers to the UL mark used on products to indicate compliance with safety standards developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Established in 1894, UL is a private safety science company that tests, certifies, and verifies that products meet defined safety requirements for electrical, fire, mechanical, and chemical hazards.

The mark is most common on electrical and consumer products intended for markets in the United States and Canada, but it is also recognized internationally to varying degrees. UL offers several variants, including UL Listed for finished products, UL Recognized for components that will be part of a larger system, UL Classified for products evaluated for specific hazards, and UL Verified for certain marketing claims without full safety certification.

Certification process typically involves submitting a product to UL for testing against relevant standards, conducting laboratory tests, and, in many cases, factory inspections and ongoing surveillance. If the product meets the criteria, UL lists or certifies it and issues the appropriate mark; continued compliance requires periodic re-testing and audits.

In practice, the UL mark appears on eligible products and can be verified through UL’s online directory (Product iQ) using product name, model number, or file number. The mark signals that the product has been evaluated to meet safety standards for its intended use and region, though it does not guarantee performance beyond tested conditions.

Contextually, UL certification is a common purchasing criterion in safety-conscious markets and often coexists with other regulatory marks (such as CE in Europe). It is a private certification rather than a government endorsement.
