UDFtiedostojärjestelmä refers to the Universal Disk Format (UDF) file system. It is a standard file system designed for optical media like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. UDF was developed to be a cross-platform, open standard, allowing data to be read and written on different operating systems without compatibility issues.

The primary goal of UDF was to overcome the limitations of older optical disc file systems such as ISO 9660, which had restrictions on file names and sizes. UDF supports longer file names, larger file sizes, and features like journaling, which helps prevent data corruption in case of unexpected power loss during a write operation.

It is commonly used for distributing software, video content (like DVDs and Blu-rays), and for data archiving. UDF is also the default file system for many DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc movie releases. While it was originally intended for optical media, UDF can also be found on other storage devices. Its widespread adoption ensures a high degree of interoperability between different devices and operating systems when dealing with optical discs.
