Tömörítéses is a Hungarian term that translates to "compression" in English. It refers to the process of reducing the size of data, such as files or streams, to save storage space or reduce transmission time. This reduction is achieved by identifying and eliminating redundancy within the data.

There are various types of compression algorithms, broadly categorized into lossless and lossy compression. Lossless compression methods, like ZIP or PNG, ensure that no data is lost during the compression and decompression process. This means the original data can be perfectly reconstructed. These are typically used for text files, executables, or images where accuracy is paramount.

Lossy compression methods, such as JPEG for images or MP3 for audio, achieve higher compression ratios by permanently discarding some data that is considered less important or imperceptible to humans. While this results in a smaller file size, the original data cannot be fully recovered. Lossy compression is commonly used for multimedia content where minor quality degradation is acceptable in exchange for significant file size reduction.
