This concept is central to fields like literary criticism, philosophy, art history, and even legal interpretation. It acknowledges that meaning is not always fixed or singular but can be multifaceted and dependent on the perspective of the interpreter.

Different theoretical frameworks offer distinct approaches to uncovering these possibilities. Semiotics, for instance, examines signs and symbols and how they create meaning, suggesting that multiple interpretations can arise from the interplay of these elements.
