Tõevõõrastus

Tõevõõrastus is an Estonian term that translates roughly to "aversion to truth" or "truth sickness." It describes a phenomenon where individuals or groups exhibit a deliberate and often visceral rejection of factual information, particularly when that information contradicts their existing beliefs, biases, or desired narratives. This aversion goes beyond mere disagreement; it involves an active resistance to acknowledging or engaging with evidence that challenges their worldview.

The concept is closely related to cognitive biases such as confirmation bias, where people tend to favor information that confirms their existing beliefs, and motivated reasoning, where individuals process information in a way that aligns with their emotional needs or desired conclusions. Tõevõõrastus can manifest in various ways, including denial of well-established scientific consensus, dismissal of historical facts, and susceptibility to misinformation and disinformation.

This phenomenon can be observed in personal interactions, political discourse, and societal trends.
