Täyteainemateriaalit, known in English as filler materials, are substances added to other materials to reduce cost, improve properties, or modify appearance. They are widely used across various industries, including plastics, rubber, paints, coatings, adhesives, and construction. Fillers can be organic or inorganic, and their selection depends on the desired outcome and compatibility with the base material.

In plastics and rubber, common inorganic fillers include calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, and carbon black. Calcium carbonate is a cost-effective filler that improves stiffness and impact strength. Talc enhances rigidity and heat resistance. Kaolin, a type of clay, can improve electrical insulation properties. Carbon black is a crucial filler in rubber, providing reinforcement and improving wear resistance, making it essential for tires. Organic fillers like wood flour or cellulose can be used in some composite materials.

In paints and coatings, fillers are used to increase opacity, improve flow, and reduce shrinkage. Titanium dioxide, while primarily a pigment, also acts as a filler. Other common fillers include barium sulfate and silica. In construction, fillers are used in concrete, mortar, and asphalt. Sand and gravel are bulk fillers, while finer materials like fly ash can improve concrete performance.

The addition of fillers can significantly alter the physical and mechanical properties of a material. They can affect hardness, tensile strength, elongation, density, and thermal conductivity.
