Työntövoimakevytus is a Finnish term that translates roughly to "thrust-to-weight ratio" in English. It is a fundamental concept in aerospace engineering and physics, particularly relevant to the performance of aircraft and rockets. The ratio quantifies how much force an engine can produce relative to the mass of the vehicle it is propelling.

A higher thrust-to-weight ratio indicates that an engine can generate more force compared to the vehicle's weight. This is advantageous for several reasons. For aircraft, a high thrust-to-weight ratio allows for rapid acceleration, steep climb rates, and superior maneuverability. It is crucial for high-performance aircraft such as fighter jets, which need to react quickly and execute complex aerial maneuvers. For rockets, a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than one is essential for liftoff. If the thrust generated by the engines is less than the rocket's weight, it will not be able to overcome gravity and leave the launchpad.

Conversely, a lower thrust-to-weight ratio means the engine's output is less potent relative to the vehicle's mass. This can result in slower acceleration and less impressive climbing capabilities. While not ideal for all applications, a lower ratio might be acceptable for vehicles where fuel efficiency or endurance is prioritized over rapid ascent, such as some transport aircraft or drones. The thrust-to-weight ratio is a dynamic value that changes as a vehicle consumes fuel, thereby reducing its mass. Therefore, engineers often consider the initial thrust-to-weight ratio at liftoff and the ratio at various stages of flight to ensure adequate performance.
