Työkalumateriaalin refers to the materials used in the manufacturing of tools. The choice of material is critical and depends on the intended use of the tool, the forces it will experience, and the desired properties such as hardness, toughness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Commonly used materials include various metals, particularly steel alloys. Carbon steels are known for their hardness but can be prone to corrosion. Alloy steels, incorporating elements like chromium, vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum, offer enhanced properties such as increased strength, toughness, and heat resistance, making them suitable for high-performance tools like drills, dies, and cutting tools. Stainless steels are chosen for tools that require corrosion resistance, such as those used in food processing or medical applications.

Beyond steel, other materials are employed. Carbide materials, such as tungsten carbide, are extremely hard and wear-resistant, often used as inserts for cutting tools that operate under high loads. Ceramics are another option for cutting tools due to their exceptional hardness and ability to withstand high temperatures. Polymers are utilized for tool handles and certain types of non-cutting tools where strength and impact resistance are needed, but extreme hardness is not a requirement. The development of new and advanced materials continues to influence the design and performance of tools across various industries.
