Työsuojeluviranomaiset

Työsuojeluviranomaiset are the authorities responsible for supervising and enforcing Finland's occupational safety and health legislation in workplaces. They work to prevent accidents and work-related illnesses by ensuring compliance with safety requirements, assessing risks, and promoting safe working practices. Their remit covers monitoring work environments, providing guidance, and guiding corrective actions when needed. The activities are carried out in accordance with national laws and EU directives on workplace safety.

The core functions include conducting workplace inspections, investigating accidents and near-misses, and, when necessary, issuing orders or penalties to remedy unsafe conditions or practices. They also provide information and training to both employers and employees, support safety representatives and workplace safety committees, and assist organizations in implementing preventive measures and risk management. In addition, they collect data on incidents, hazards, and compliance to identify systemic risks and inform policy and program development.

Organizationally, Työsuojeluviranomaiset operate through regional or local units and collaborate with employers, employee organizations, and professional associations. They work in partnership with other public authorities to ensure a coherent approach to occupational safety and health across sectors. The overarching goal is to maintain safe, healthy, and productive working conditions, reduce work-related injuries and illnesses, and promote a culture of prevention in the Finnish labor market.
