Työsuojeluvaltuutetut

Työsuojeluvaltuutetut, often translated as "occupational safety representatives" or "worker safety delegates," are elected individuals within Finnish workplaces who represent employees in matters of occupational health and safety. Their primary role is to promote a safe and healthy working environment and to ensure that employer obligations concerning workplace safety are met.

The election of a työsuojeluvaltuutettu is mandatory in workplaces with at least 10 employees. If there are fewer than 20 employees, a deputy representative may also be elected. Larger workplaces may elect additional deputy representatives. These representatives are elected for a term of two years.

Key responsibilities of a työsuojeluvaltuutettu include monitoring workplace conditions, identifying potential hazards, and advocating for necessary improvements. They participate in occupational safety and health discussions, inspect the workplace, and can be consulted on matters related to accident prevention and employee well-being. They also have the right to receive necessary training and information to effectively carry out their duties.

Työsuojeluvaltuutetut act as a link between employees and the employer, facilitating communication and cooperation on safety issues. They have the right to access relevant information from the employer and to be present during occupational health inspections. If they observe serious risks to employee safety or health, they have the authority to halt work in that specific area until the risk is addressed.
