Työstöominaisuudet, also known as machinability, refers to the ease with which a material can be shaped through various manufacturing processes such as cutting, milling, turning, and drilling. It is a critical factor in determining the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of producing a part from a given material.

Several material properties influence machinability. These include hardness, which affects the force required to cut the material and the rate of tool wear. Toughness, or the material's ability to absorb energy before fracturing, also plays a role, as a very brittle material may chip or fracture unpredictably during machining. Ductility, the ability to deform without fracturing, can lead to stringy chips that may interfere with the machining process. Thermal conductivity is important because it affects how heat generated during cutting is dissipated. Poor thermal conductivity can lead to localized overheating of both the workpiece and the cutting tool, reducing tool life and potentially altering the material's properties.

Machinability is often assessed through empirical tests and is frequently quantified using indices or compared to reference materials. For example, carbon steels are often used as a baseline for machinability ratings. Factors such as cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, tool geometry, and lubrication all interact with the material's inherent työstöominaisuudet to determine the overall machining performance. Understanding and optimizing for good työstöominaisuudet are essential for efficient manufacturing and achieving desired surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
