Twinstranded

Twinstranded refers to a specific type of genetic anomaly where an individual possesses two sets of homologous chromosomes, but one set is derived from one parent and the other set is derived from the other parent, and these two sets are duplicated. This is distinct from typical diploidy where an individual receives one set of chromosomes from each parent. In twinstranded individuals, there is a duplication of the entire set of chromosomes inherited from each parent, resulting in a tetraploid state where there are four copies of each chromosome, organized into two pairs of homologous chromosomes from each parent. This condition is extremely rare and often leads to severe developmental abnormalities or is not viable. The exact mechanisms leading to twinstrandedness are not fully understood but are believed to involve errors during gamete formation or early embryonic development. Research into this phenomenon is limited due to its rarity.
