Tvíverknaðar

Tvíverknaðar, also known as double knitting, is a knitting technique used to create a fabric with two distinct layers of fabric that are interconnected. This method produces a thick, reversible fabric where the same pattern appears on both sides, though often with inverted colors. It is achieved by knitting two separate layers of fabric simultaneously, with the stitches of each layer being held together by a common set of loops at the edge.

The process involves working with two different colored yarns. Typically, one color is used for the "right" side and the other for the "wrong" side. As the knitter works, stitches of one color are knitted while the stitches of the other color are slipped. This creates a mirror image effect. The technique can be worked flat or in the round. When worked in the round, the two layers are joined together to form a tube.

Tvíverknaðar is known for its durability and warmth. Because the fabric is essentially two layers thick, it offers excellent insulation. It is often used for items where both sides of the fabric will be visible, such as scarves, hats, and blankets. While it can be more time-consuming than single knitting due to managing two colors and slipped stitches, the resulting fabric is highly valued for its unique properties and professional finish.
